Please ensure that your child’s safety is maximised by ensuring that they are wearing a helmet if riding a bike or travelling on a foot powered scooter or skateboard to school.

Having worked in schools for over 30 years, I have had the unfortunate personal experience of supporting students who have been injured in critical incidents involving accidents with bikes, scooters and skateboards. It worries me greatly that I see Burnside students riding, scootering and skateboarding to school without helmets. Accidents can happen so quickly and a head injury without the protection of a helmet can be devastating.

Please also be aware that new rules and increased penalties came into effect on Tuesday, 1 November 2022 and apply to people riding personal mobility devices, such as e-scooters, in Queensland.

A broad range of personal mobility devices can be used in Queensland. You must comply with the rules for personal mobility devices and the general road rules as they are classified as a type of vehicle.
Children under 12 years of age must not ride personal mobility devices. E-scooters and e-skateboards are classified as personal mobility devices, students under 12 years of age are not to ride these devices to school. Any Year 6 students who are 12 years of age, can only ride these devices with adult supervision.
